In the history of modern art a montage usually means photomontage (see John Heartfield): a montage put together in the photographic darkroom. The idea of the photographic dark room is still, even in this digital age, present in the picture editing program Photoshop.The digital dark room is of course only at metaphor just as the commands paste and cut.
